Recreation Department to Host Coach Clinic in March

New youth sports coaches are invited to attend a S.A.F.E.T.Y. Coach Clinic, sponsored by Rutgers University's Youth Sports Research Council -- a requirement for volunteering in Springfield's youth sports programs. The clinic will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, from 6:30-9:30 pm, and costs $40 per resident and $45 per non-resident. It will be held virtually. Attendees should be prepared to log in from an off-site computer. Virtual attendance will be confirmed by the Springfield Recreation Department.

8U Springfield Storm Softball Team Donates Championship Trophy to Chisholm

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, coaches and players from the 8U Springfield Storm softball team gathered at the Chisholm Community Center to celebrate their championship win in the D2 Fall Parkway League this past fall. The team, led by Head Coach Scott Kain, won the championship game on Saturday, October 28, 2023, against South Plainfield. The championship trophy was donated to Chisholm and installed in the trophy case in the rear lobby to be viewed by those who enter the building for years to come.

Celebrate Black History Month with Local Author Sheila D. Hairston on February 22

In honor of Black History Month, the Springfield Free Public Library is pleased to offer an appearance by local author Sheila D. Hairston at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 22.  Ms. Hairston is the author of E'KALB HOLLOW, a novel about the Braxtons, a family of eight who lived in the poor but close-knit community of E'kalb Hollow during the height of the Jim Crow era.  Although the book is a work of fiction, it is based on the author's own family and actual events.

Springfield Free Public Library to be closed on February 19 for President's Day

The Springfield Free Public Library will be closed on Monday, February 19, in observance of President's Day.   Library hours during the rest of President's Day weekend are as follows:

Saturday, February 17     10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Sunday, February 18        1:00 - 4:00 PM

 

The library will resume regular hours on Tuesday, February 20, at 10:00 AM. 

Chisholm to Host Sweet Samantha Baking & Decorating Classes

Children ages 5-11 are invited to join Sweet Samantha for seven weeks of baking and cake/cupcake/cookie decorating classes! A new season of creative and tasty projects starts soon! The popular classes are hosted by the Springfield Recreation Department and held at the Chisholm Community Center (100 South Springfield Avenue, Springfield). Minimum enrollment is needed for the classes to run, so please register early.
